Average ring size for men and women
Most women wear about a US 6–6½ and most men about a US 9–10. Use these only as a starting point — fingers vary a lot.
| Group | US | UK | EU | Inner diameter, millimetres |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Average women’s | 6–6½ | L–M½ | 52–53 | 16.5–17.0 |
| Most women | 5–7 | J½–N½ | 49–54 | 15.7–17.3 |
| Average men’s | 9–10 | R½–T½ | 60–62 | 19.0–19.8 |
| Most men | 8–11 | P½–V½ | 57–65 | 18.1–20.6 |
What shifts the average
- Height and build matter more than the number on a chart — taller, broader hands run larger.
- Which finger. These figures are for the ring finger; index and middle fingers are usually larger.
- Temperature and time of day move a finger by up to half a size.
- Band width. A wide band needs a quarter to half size more.
Height and weight answer
Can height or weight estimate ring size?
Not reliably. Taller or broader people may trend toward larger rings, but two people with the same height and weight can have very different fingers. There is no responsible height-to-ring-size or weight-to-ring-size formula.
- Useful as context
- Overall build, hand width and whether the person usually wears larger glove sizes.
- Better evidence
- A ring worn on the correct finger, its inner diameter, or a direct finger-circumference measurement.
- Still check
- The exact hand and finger, knuckle clearance, band width, temperature and time of day.
For a surprise, use height and weight only to reject an implausible guess—not to choose the final size. Borrow a ring or choose a resizable setting.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average ring size for women?
The most common women’s ring size is about US 6 to 6½ (UK L–M, EU 52–53, ~16.5–17 mm diameter). Sizes 5 to 7 cover most women.
What is the average ring size for men?
The most common men’s ring size is about US 9 to 10 (UK R½–T½, EU 60–62, ~19–20 mm diameter). Sizes 8 to 11 cover most men.
How can I guess a ring size for a surprise?
Borrow a ring they already wear on the right finger and measure its inner diameter, or compare it to our circles. If you must guess, US 6 for women and US 9 for men are the safest starting points — and choose a resizable style.
Can height and weight predict ring size?
No. Height, weight and build can shift the odds, but they cannot predict an individual ring size. Hand proportions, the exact finger, knuckle shape and daily swelling matter more. Use height and weight only as weak context, then measure a ring or finger.
